About

A casino is not the right decision for East Greenbush. There are countless studies that document the negative effects casinos have on communities just like ours – including drops in property values, increase in crime, and numerous social costs spanning addiction, substance abuse and alcohol related traffic accidents. To protect East Greenbush from these unwanted effects, we must say no to casino expansion into our community.

The following are just a few studies confirming these negative effects:

Property Values:

Studies have concluded that the impact of casinos are "unambiguously negative" on a housing market, including a 1.1 to 2.3 percent decrease in home values in one community, totaling $64 million to $128 million in lost home value.

Social Impact of Casinos:

A 2012 study of casino crime by the University of Maryland found that there is a 10 percent increase in substance abuse, suicide, violent crime, theft and bankruptcy when a new casino opens in town.

Crime:

Studies have found 8-9% crime increases at a cost near $70 per year for every person living nearby a casino. After Atlantic City’s rapid casino growth in the 1980s, crime increased by 100 percent in a 30 mile radius surrounding the area.

The impact of casinos on fatal alcohol-related traffic accidents in the United States:

There is a "strong link" between the arrival of a casino and an increase in traffic accidents.

Casino market saturation, addictive design of slot machines, social costs:

Additional casinos do not translate to additional gambling revenue – the market is already too saturated. However, casinos do bring an increase in gambling problems among citizens.

Long term revenue unsustainable:

Many casinos are shutting their doors, as a result of a proliferation of casinos and anxious consumers in the wake of the financial crisis. The revenue is simply not sustainable.

Government should not be supporting casinos as sources of revenue:

According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, while revenues initially increase after a new casino opens, the effect is brief and falls off when gamblers move on to new casinos.
